The first pillar of thought is “having the ball”: the player, in fact, must have fun and he succeeds the moment he has possession of the ball. But where do you have to control the ball better? Obviously in the opponent’s midfield, where we have more chances to score; Furthermore, it is essential to be organized to regain possession of the ball as quickly as possible if we lose the ball. And to achieve this objective, it is necessary to convince players, especially those with more technical quality, who prefer to play in the offensive half of the field, that it is better to have an immediate and quick effort 2–3–4 meters forward, than than a 60-70 run back to reposition the team.
We need confidence to have courage…We are courageous because we are not afraid of making mistakes!
Stimulating courage means making players the protagonists. I like the example of defenders to clarify this concept because it is related to them. Some prefer to defend in their area, as they know the ‘mischief’ of individual marking, they are physically strong, skilled in the duel. Others should work further forward, close to midfield, as they are quick and ‘strong’ in reading. As the game model gives us dominance in the opponent’s midfield, it is logical that it is essential to stay short and work in the most advanced areas. And to do it well, players have to be determined, courageous in managing the space behind them (around 50 meters) and the space in front of them.
Having the ball with us always depends on our behavior without it…Can we be happy without the ball? It is not me!
We need success – and whenever we are successful when we press, we play well and we are fresher with the ball. We must try everything to keep the team compact, with and without the ball. I increasingly believe that pressing makes us a fresher team instead of letting the opponent play comfortably, when we are strong under pressure we almost always produce good performances. The better we are without the ball, the more ball we will have.
It doesn’t make sense to say we have an idea for a game (or a job) and not believe in it 100%. Of course, my path is not the best for many people, and I am convinced that it is not the only one… and I also know that my path is not the only one. If the club’s CEO doesn’t like me, he should choose another coach who proposes something different. I can correct some facets, remove or add, but I don’t question the pillars of my beliefs. If there is no result, I don’t reduce the proposal, I double it. I will try to look for improvement, where it is wrong, where to evolve, I will try to add more quality to the entire process, and it has nothing to do with game systems, but rather with how to improve my path more and more and try to bring it closer to probability of victory…The players, of course, are part of it and are the main artists, they are the ones who execute and bring the vision to life… Yes, without them everything is nothing more than a vision.
Mudar…ou Melhorar?
Change or improve?
I observe many professionals radically changing the ideas they deeply believed in when a game or a championship didn’t go well. But, as with everything in life, nothing is perfectly correct, because we are imperfect beings, however, I believe in study and knowledge to improve and be able to evolve within our credible processes. Every day I try to seek knowledge and ask myself how I can improve in this or that aspect, only then can I bring something different to my players… when it comes to football and improving we cannot forget who we are talking about… ” who” our players are, the “how” is how to provide them with additional tools and how to improve their skills.
Must win it will be never pressure…Must win is motivation!
After victories, celebrations with the team are very short… victory becomes a matter to be examined and not celebrated. She becomes an inert body that must undergo the necessary autopsy. In fact, victories should always go to the fans. It’s up to us to model our ideas to our players, and more… much more than having the right tactics or strategy, it’s conveying that we trust them, that they can fail because… we will also be with them when they fail. I believe in the truth…I believe that the players know if we are real…they are not mistaken. I will follow the best ideas for me, concepts that make me grow, yes I will change without any problem as long as “my game” evolves, but I will never, ever, change my principles as a human being, because it is these principles that also define me as a coach.
PRESSURE
It is a behavior that is an integral part of my way of seeing the game, and as such it is essential that my teams execute it. However, we will have to collectively keep in mind (when and where) we execute it. We know that a game has several moments and phases and that we also have an opponent with more or less quality and depending on these points we will know (when and where), and also all players must be aware of (why). All players and all lines must master the defensive aspects, so that we are never surprised. Reading where the next pass is going – forcing mistakes together, knowing that defending forward is our way. We need success – and whenever we are successful in the first phase of pressure, we play well and are fresher with the ball. We must try everything to keep the team compact, with and without the ball. If we win the ball high up, we will have a shorter field to cover and probably fewer opponents between us and the goal. In short, we will always have an easier path to the goal. Furthermore, in a high-pressing scheme, we make it more difficult for the opponent to move the ball to our side of the field. In a lower pressure configuration, we would give up part of our field to the opponent. Through well-placed pressure, we force the opponent to have to fight for every inch of territory.
PLAYNG FAST
To put it simply we have to play fast, to play fast we have to know what’s coming next. One of the main culprits for losing possession is slow play, and one of the main causes of slow play is players not making their decisions until the ball reaches their feet. Because football is such a fluid game, the picture is always changing. Spaces appear, disappear and reappear. Good numbers quickly become bad numbers. All the pieces are in a constant state of flux, so what was a good idea half a second ago may now be a terrible idea. It is very common for a player to focus on controlling the ball, then look up and begin the decision-making process. This is a big problem. Every second he loses to concentrate on reception is another second that the opponent adjusts, organizes itself defensively and shortens the field of action. It is impossible for a player to play quickly if he makes decisions after receiving the ball. To keep the ball, players must see the options available before the ball reaches their feet. In short, it’s asking what’s next, a constant question throughout the game. This is one of our team’s daily tasks, it is gratifying to know that the player is also evolving in tune with the team’s way of playing.
VELOCIDADE
WIDTH / SPACE
Instead of staying at the dividing line (or even half a step away from it), they will stay a step or two inside it. Unacceptable. Every inch of space you waste is an inch you are giving to your opponent. Every centimeter wasted is one less centimeter of work the opponent has to do to recover the ball. Smart possession players are greedy about those inches because they know that the further the opponent has to chase to get the ball, the less likely they are to actually get it.
AGRESSIVIDADE
AGRESIVITY
For us, the main ingredient is defensive aggressiveness off the ball, because the better you are in the 30 percent without the ball, the more freedom and conviction it will give you to play attacking football. We believe that it is this 30 percent that differentiates us from many other teams, with our intensity and unity in these moments. In that 30 percent, we all do it together – the front players who prepare for pressure situations and a backline that supports by finding challenges in a high area of the field.
I’m a possession trainer. I know many people don’t like it, but I like it. I was a professional player and played on teams that valued possession and on teams that didn’t. And I always liked having the ball, because as a defender, I remember very well what I felt when I had to run to get it, how tired I got, how nervous and lost I felt because I often ran, ran and…nothing. I could see what that did to my teammates. On many occasions, I was an eyewitness to the physical and emotional collapse of a team that had spent much of the afternoon chasing a ball it never managed to reach. And I didn’t like it at all. So I’m a believer in possession, because luckily I also felt the reverse of the coin and liked it much, much more.
Legendary trainer Graham Ramsay taught me to think of every pass as a punch in a heavyweight fight. In the first rounds, these punches have no significant effect. The boxers barely seem to notice them. But each one is wreaking havoc, and by the final three rondos, those punches start to feel like cannonballs. You see, this is not about the effectiveness of a single punch; it’s about the damage done by accumulating those punches. The same applies to passes in a football game. Many coaches mix possession drills into their daily training sessions. And since their team is up against an inferior opponent, players can show their ability to keep possession of the ball. But when faced with a level-headed opponent who makes possession of the ball difficult, players panic. They give in to pressure and quickly abandon their style and end up becoming more of a banal team. Ownership is a long-term investment and the bystander will not always be kind to us. We will have to face some difficult moments, sometimes the other team will steal the ball from us. That’s how football works. But if we are a possession team that refuses to abandon its style, we will see our investment start to grow and then snowball.
A bola tem de ser nossa! The ball must be ours
Every time we pass the ball, the opponent will chase it. It’s one thing to chase a 20 meter pass once or twice, but imagine having to chase the same pass 15 to 20 times in a single half – in a sprint. It’s tiring. It’s demoralizing. This makes the opponent tired and frustrated. And when an opponent is tired and frustrated, that opponent will make mistakes. Players lose patience and start making mistakes that destroy their team’s defensive form. Teammates need to make up for these mistakes, but they’re too tired to do so effectively. Their bodies fail them. Spaces appear and goal chances are practically created. But our team needs to commit for the long term. Some coaches think possession football is a mistake. They will tell you that the most effective way to win a game is with a direct style that gets the ball from point A to point B as quickly as possible. I will not discuss it. There are a lot of teams that do really well playing straight football, and if they’re winning, who am I to argue? Even so, I prefer to bet on a team that wants to keep the ball. There are two parts to a football game – the part where my team has the ball and the part where their team has the ball. It is my belief that when you can lengthen the former and shorten the latter, you have a better chance of winning the game. It’s a simple thought, which befits a coach like me who is a fan of simplicity.
We have to be different human beings thinking about the same idea… together, but as one!
If we are a team in possession of the ball, all the players need to believe in that. It’s not as easy as it sounds. Possession football requires patience. It involves making a lot of low-risk passes, and that means the ball will often move sideways and backwards. The problem is that too many transitions. If we are a possession team, then we need a team full of players committed to possession. It only takes one impatient player to undo all the good work your team does. To combat this, we need to sell our style. Players need to know what they’re doing and why they’re doing it. This is where our idea sales pitch is important. It’s up to us to bash our players over the head with this information morning, noon, and night.
It will no longer be our deep technical/tactical/physical knowledge that will define what makes the difference between the success or failure of a coach, but the ability to connect strongly with our players and other people who are part of the work group , knowing how to listen to them, feeling understood, competent, important and valuable within the structure, worthy of our trust, so that they believe in us, follow us and commit to us. We need to be an inexhaustible source of communication, generating dialogues or conversations that are transformative and engaging. In fact (my opinion) it is through communication that we make or not the difference, and the way, when and what is the quality of our communication. Of course, we have the hard work of good planning, we spend a lot of time necessary with analyzes and not a few decisions to make, but the vast majority of functions and responsibilities unfold through communication, which vary between; individual and collective, public and private, with our players or with the staff, with the management, during training sessions, in the dressing room and also with the media.
What would become of us if that were true?… What effect would that have on our future?… What would we be limiting ourselves to?… What would our curiosity be like to continue learning about everything and everyone, to seek new solutions and answers, to innovate in training? Who would we be? How would we become transformative leaders if everything was actually invented in football?
In the quality of our conversations, transformations take place, capable of positively connecting, seducing and positively influencing, but also having the ability to demand, claim and set limits, share common values that commit everyone, propose challenges, express and change states of mind. courage, boosting and recognizing to compromise and reach consensus, but in addition to all these situations, we also have the less sweet moments, those pending conversations that we often try to avoid because they cost us, because we know they will hurt someone and that’s why we never find the right moment , sometimes they make us feel afraid because we know that we can lose someone valuable, that we can get hurt or injure someone, which can sometimes jeopardize our authority.
The authentic leader knows that it is his followers (players and the rest of the club’s human structure) who must recognize and accept him as such. Leadership is a relational phenomenon that is based on a perception that followers have of the leader, and the quality of this relationship will come directly from the quality of communication and the quality of their conversations. Some features are: [ ] Learning to overcome fears and limitations that most of the time only exist in our heads and in their heads [ ] Creating our own ideas that suit us and our players. [ ] Discovering how we can offer virtues through our values and what we truly believe. [ ] Learning to walk in the shoes of others to be humble and compassionate towards them. [ ] Always developing our emotional intelligence (In my case, intimacy with God) to be able to transform moods. [ ] Constantly meditating on our professional commitment, always having a vision and purpose that inspires me and others. [ ] Ultimately, the need to achieve a valuable expression of values and way of life in order to be seen as a valued and trusted leader by all.
Being a technician is, above all, the responsibility of being true, fair and consistent in all your actions, reactions, attitudes and behaviors. It is to develop, through practice, training and exercise, a certain way of playing, from individual actions to collective actions, with principles and rules defined, understood and accepted by all. Let’s say it’s like (trans)forming a group of men (women) into a team, who compete together to reach a common objective, committed and supportive, with Values that define and identify them.
Dinâmica vs Valores
Dynamics vs Values
Valores Coletivos Collective Values
The values of a team are a fundamental, decisive and non-negotiable point. I speak of actions, reactions, attitudes and behaviors. I am referring to values that involve the athlete, they shape and guide their behavior and that are part of the day-to-day of a work team that has common goals and responsibilities, they are values that must guide the group. Values that must be identifiable when someone is watching our games or training sessions, that can identify us through the actions, reactions, attitudes and behaviors that we present. And I don’t just mean the players, but also the rest of the staff and myself, the coach. Without a doubt, many times we have to assume the role of “educator” and the example has to come from us.
O jogador. The Player
Each player is a unique being, and that’s why each team, each squad, each year, each season…It’s “something unique”. It is from the players that teams are made that then support the players. They are “the living organisms” of everyday life, in training and in the game. It is for their well-being (physical, psychic, emotional, social, collective) that we think of all the details to be able to help them, enhance them and make them reach levels of performance not reached until then. For a good player, in high performance, good training from an early age is decisive. When looking for a “complete” player for a professional team, we basically look for someone who has all the tools that were supposedly acquired from his initial base of sports training, and based on that we should increase his sport-specific enrichment.
Football is passion, when it makes us get up from the chair, makes us pull at the lungs, clench our teeth, or clench our fists. Football is reason, when we try to understand why the striker missed that open goal goal or the Central defender who couldn’t have that failure. Football is efficiency, because we all want to win and when we win we feel assertive, secure and happy and if we lose it’s as if we’ve lost a piece of our soul, as if something irreparable has happened to us. When we win, the whole world is happier and even people seem all good to us and when we lose it seems that all the “gods” turn against us and the evil that surrounds us becomes more felt. Football is science when we measure efforts, calculate offside to the millimeter and discuss formulas in our conversations to find out what we think will happen. Football is art when a player dominates the ball that was full of “poison”, when a dribble is invented in a complicated situation, when we give a “pen” or a “hat” and the opponent is left behind, when a simple goal leaves 6 players behind, when unpredictability takes over the moment where there is no visible way out.
FUTEBOL NÃO É O MEU DEUS…É O MEU TRABALHO!
FOOTBALL IS NOT MY GOD…IT’S MY JOB!
Football becomes reality when the game is over and we go home full of happiness or sadness. Football becomes pride when our players are able to internalize and apply our idea of the game. Football is miserable when emotion manipulators are committed to ′′ dancing ′′ and massacring us on top of the results. Football is insignificant when we hear that what matters and matters is just winning, in any way. Football is meaningless when they turn it into a business. Football is wonderful when we feel comfortable included in a friendly group, where everyone walks towards the same goal thinking uniformly, sacrificing each other inside the 4 lines and outside of them. Football is effort, sweat and dignity. But also It’s horrible when players forget to play and put on a show because they remember that the most important thing is to win. Anyway, football is so many things, how is it possible to reduce it only to the result?
O treinador.
The best coaches (in any modality) are those who teach the basics, that is, the fundamentals of the game. This is (in my opinion) what football has been losing, and that is why in many places it is played so badly. Michael Jordan explains in the book (My Philosophy of Success) that“from the moment we move away from the basics, the whole structure tends to collapse”. They have turned football into a purely commercial issue, so they decided to give it an unnecessary superficial tone where what matters least is the game itself. The media (especially TV), which have become the owners of the show, are largely to blame for this transformation. They manufacture an epic and trivial product based on this game, but manipulated in such a way that it ends up offering a show of cinematographic images. Intranscendent repetitions and empty comments that make us forget the true notion of the game. They’re creating a banal football culture where they look for each other, big shots of sweat and muscle, mixing football with eroticism, highlighting famous figures in the audience anyway, but… where’s football? The game? This, as well as its analysis, fades into the background. These days, the commentator’s ridiculous comments, the narrator screaming in a strange way to “be different”, the presenter’s clothes (or lack thereof), as well as the errors and failures are more relevant than the game itself, forgetting that these mistakes are part of this game, in the end, those who lost are highlighted negatively and # to vote who thinks the coach should leave, the clown in today’s football is always the same. The Coach.
And in this theatrical context, the foundations of football deteriorate and we forget the simple fundamentals of the game. An example of this is that we often observe the player with the ball running with it and the others watching, and it should be precisely the opposite. Players look at the ball a lot and forget to look at the game, they want to finish the move where it started, there are no “distractions”, frontal supports, you run with the ball like crazy and that’s why there is so much clash between players. You don’t see more players in the middle creating and thinking because it doesn’t matter anymore, we must “force” in any way. There is a deficit of ideas and, in the absence of them, you have to send the 9 running with a kick to get the ball out of the danger zone, without understanding that if it leaves there quickly, it will return more quickly. You don’t play with midfielders anymore (unless the opponent leaves them completely free), it’s easier to kick forward, raise the troops 40 meters and see what happens, we can even win the ball from time to time since the opponent is facing and it’s more difficult for those who attack, but it doesn’t matter, fight, make tackles, leave your skin on the field, score, give everything you have on the field… as if you were going to a war that nobody can miss, no one can risk it, and when they lose, they cry, curse, treat each other badly as if the simple football game was the reason for them to survive. The public doesn’t go to the stadium to watch football, it goes to cheer for their team, they don’t care if they play well or badly, they want to win, and the coach, falling into these “rat traps” that he has to win or else he’s fired.
SÓ FAÇO PARTE DAQUILO QUE ACREDITO!
I’M ONLY PART OF WHAT I BELIEVE!
What does it really mean to be a football player? Big business is confusing values, and it’s not just in football, but also in other sports that are related to people’s emotions. The urgency of business is devouring football times and for this reason the learning processes are suppressed, there is no more time for training, we live in the fast food era, everything has to be fast. Coaches no longer teach, I believe that more than 70% of football players do not understand the game and worse than that is that there is a lack of commitment to the meaning of their profession and more connection with the “success” that they propose. They live a career just thinking about success, money, fame and not the pleasure of the game or the ball. I believe that the player is also included in the new philosophy of life that deals with the immediacy of success, money and in the culture of those who think that one should “win anyway”.
When leadership is effective, it activates professionalism, optimism, the spirit of self-improvement, solidarity behaviors… Success too. Just as a defeat has the defect of bringing us closer to the next defeat (because of the chain of consequences it produces), victory brings us closer to a second victory (because that vicious circle becomes virtuous). The “Cholo” Simeone says it in a simpler way, that is, better if possible: “Winning brings winning”. That doesn’t mean who’s winning will always win and who’ll lose will always lose, so in a way this enigma of “chain results” stumbles, but doesn’t fall definitively, what I mean by that…It’s just that the fact the fact that we are winning will not guarantee us victory in the next challenge, just as if we are losing it is the “alarm” that something is wrong and forces us to pay attention. And here is the leader’s leadership put to the test.
No futebol, o gol é a grande metáfora do sucesso. O grande objetivo.
In football, the goal is the great metaphor for success. The big goal. And when it’s achieved, the feeling of completion triggers physical reactions. Or have you ever seen someone tired after scoring a goal? Seen like this, the goal is the best fitness coach we’ve ever known. It also triggers psychic reactions, because the feeling of happiness is projected onto the general mood. Or have you ever seen a team depressed after scoring a goal? Seen in this way, he is also the best psychologist. But the feeling of fullness also affects the members, the fans, the managers. Or have you ever seen someone stay out of hugs when this happens? Seen this way, the goal, even if it is an individual gesture, is also the best socializer. The goal, in short, has no defects for the team that scores it. It’s as reasonable as only a number can be (1-0, for example) and as exciting as only a whoop of joy can be. But in order to score a goal, someone allowed it, if someone scored it means that someone suffered, and with that, reactions also come: sadness, disappointment, frustration and the worst, motivating decisions that most of the time are due to the stressful moment, not being the more accurate, even reaching family and professional structures that should not have influences derived from someone’s mistake or success. Of course I’m referring to the Success/Frustration phenomenon…two feelings that are separated by such a steep space…Just as, in our personal lives, a momentary “small and irrelevant” mistake can separate us from Love and Anger God’s.
Dois caminhos diferentes, em tudo na vida. Só existem dois!
Two different paths, In everything in life. There are only two!
Few things clear the way better than having a clear goal. The goal as a goal to be achieved, as a beacon that guides the effort, as a corollary of a job well done, as an integrating element, as a promoter of optimism, as a reducer of uncertainty, as a booster of confidence. I am aware that there are many ways to achieve goals. There are those who think that the shortest route is to score as many goals as possible, and those who believe that the best thing is to avoid having them scored against you. Of course there is merit in heroic defense, but greatness is about bravery. There are two main types of coaches: those who think about the game giving the ball to the rival and those who imagine the game giving command to their own team. There are two ways of seeing football, the company and also life. To be or not to be a protagonist. Those who claim to be “balanced” are not in the middle of the two theories, but rather, for my taste, nowhere. In a 1986 World Cup match in Mexico, in which Argentina ended the first half winning by a minimum and speculating more than necessary, Argentines arrived at the locker room still shaken. It was then that Maradona’s voice thundered: “All the tactics you want, but forward. Not behind.” Being great has to do with that determination, with that courage to say and doit.
I believe in sport because I believe in merit. I still want to believe that to achieve winning status in football, you don’t need to be the son of any particular parent or friend of any particular coach, nor the friendship of any sports journalist… In a stadium there are too many witnesses for any arbitrariness to be committed with impunity. Of course there is chance, which is what the good feel as a threat and the bad as a hope. Of course, as in life, there is fatality, which can overthrow all illusions of achieving glory. And there is also, of course, what we call the “environment”, an environment that can help or hinder the evolution of a football player. But make no mistake: in the world of football, in an overwhelming percentage, we get what we deserve based on the talent we are born with and the effort we invest. Whenever I have to experience a culminating moment in my professional career, one feeling prevails over all others: the satisfaction of a job well done. There are times when luck plays an important role and joy runs rampant; but whatever passion may say, as I once heard Arrigo Sacchi say, “a victory without merit is not a victory.”
How does a coach learn? The answer that Pep gave years ago is still valid: “You learn by looking and thinking. Observing and reflecting”. The coach must observe and analyze matches and training; he must extract teachings from his masters to apply them in other contexts; he must confront opinions within his coaching staff and also with other coaches; must rehearse and test new moves, consult and debate with the players; he must analyze rivals, watch games, study videos, review mistakes, go over details and reflect on all this; must read books and analysis documents, take refresher courses and share experiences with other football coaches and other sports disciplines; must “unlearn”; and, if possible, you should delve into the history of football to find out precisely where we come from. Says Ángel Cappa: “The future of football is in the past”. The coach must never stop observing and reflecting. This is the only way he will be able to continue learning, as long as he keeps an open mind and does not get carried away by preconceived ideas: “There is no such thing as learning if thinking originates in previous conclusions”, described Krishnamurti. Belgian doctor Maurice Piéron concluded: “A coach who doesn’t know how to observe is less of a coach. More than 80% of the time in a training session or game, the coach watches.”
No futebol, a educação é o treinamento.
Learning, training and teaching is not enough. To keep moving forward, you have to transform. Professor Santiago Coca lucidly expressed the objective of the training: “Let’s dignify football as a game and release talent”. Talent, as Marina explains, “is not a precious stone, scarce and coveted […]. This idea forms part of a static conception of the world and, in my opinion, antiquated. It is the antithesis of a creative vision of intelligence, capable of inventing and expanding our possibilities, our wealth, our talent”. Talent is not a gift, but the act of applying our resources well. And how is this achieved? With training: it is true that we are born with a genetic endowment, “but it is also true that not all of these genes are activated or, as we say technically, expressed. The environment influences this selective activation, and one of the components of the environment is education, which in this way modulates our genetics and thus becomes a generator of talent in the strict sense”, adds Marina. In football, education is training. So, by training, that is, by receiving a certain education, the player will be able to activate and express the genes (and football characteristics) that he has inside him. Training is the stimulant of this process. Arrigo Sacchi said something along the same lines: “The coach’s objective is that, through play and work, the player is built”. team sport, not an individual sport.
The coach teaches and guides learning, but the player is trained.
Training yourself means extracting all the potential you have: physical, technical, intellectual, volitional, emotional, tactical, competitive… If the coach is good, he will be a “facilitator” of this potential extraction. Training is the talent hatching process: It’s not enough just to be told how it is. To truly correct a defect, one must first have suffered its consequences”. Training is the essential tool for building habits. “Our whole life, in its definite form, is but a set of habits,” said William James. (Researchers at Duke University estimate that more than 40% of the actions we take each day are not spur-of-the-moment decisions but habits.) Why are habits so important? Marina explains that “our ability to develop activities attentively is small and costly. Remember when you learned to drive, or when you tried to learn a new language. Everything requires an exaggerated and tiring concentration […]. Little by little, these activities become automatic, becoming a habit, and we can carry them out without paying attention. Through habits, we expand our perceptive, intellectual, motor, moral capacity […]. Education is, finally, the acquisition of habits”. We are what we repeatedly do, noted Aristotle, before proclaiming that excellence is not an act but a habit.
Why should it be any different in football? For a certain action to come out well, does the athlete have to think? If Usain Bolt thinks how he should run, he doesn’t. If Stephen Curry thinks how he has to shoot, he doesn’t score. If Leo Messi thought about how he should shoot, he would never score a goal. All of them must think (a lot and repeatedly) during “deliberate practice”, in training (so this practice must be excellent and demanding), but not during competition. The “habit” that is acquired in training is fundamental to understand the dynamism of intelligence (Marina) and for the success of the sports action performed. Emma Stone explained that she only knew one way to sing well live: “You have to rehearse a lot. He must know the song so much and learn it so well that he feels free to improvise”. Coach Fran Beltrán wrote: “Effective football is when you stop thinking. That’s why I must practice what I want to do, so that it becomes a habit”. When we talk about football habits, do we mean “automatisms”? In other words: how are the constant repetitions of plays and actions in training compatible with the conception of football as a complex phenomenon? Seirul·lo responds: “We try to repeat specific game elements with some variation. Because if I always do the same to you, the third time you get me. What should we do and train? We should build game situations where auto-repeat has no value. We must reduce the ‘automatisms’ of the game. Because if we automate the game, then you’ll never beat me: in ten seconds I can find out what your automatisms are. What we must work on, even if we first have to discover them, are the efficient interactions that exist between players. It is not another vocabulary, but another concept”.
The interactions between players make up a fundamental scope in football.
A team’s performance can only be multiplied (or improved) if the players complement their capabilities through the influences they exert on each other and with each other. How they influence their peers and how they are influenced by others when they work together. This is certainly a relevant factor for any coach when deciding on a lineup: often, the best lineup is not made up of the best players, but those who best interrelate. The art of interactions in a team has multiple vectors: sometimes it depends on the coach’s vision and sense of smell; in others, from the improvisations of the players themselves; and sometimes they just happen by chance. Talent is not a gift, but a process. The coach is an artisan of teaching, who cultivates talent through deliberate practice (“deep learning”), which encourages the creation of habits that allow the player to act without the need to think: just act. Habits are one of the triggers of talent; it is also necessary that the most efficient interactions between the players appear. Corrections must be immediate to benefit learning progress. If what is not trained is forgotten, how should training be so as not to forget it and, above all, so that it offers its best fruits?
